NEVADA SENATE MAJORITY LEADER AARON FORD STATEMENT ON ADAM LAXALT’S PLAN TO SLASH PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING LAS VEGAS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 9, 2017
Following a report from the Nevada Independent that likely Republican gubernatorial candidate Adam Laxalt will campaign to repeal a bipartisan compromise that expanded public school funding in Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Aaron D. Ford issued the following statement:
“The historic, bipartisan increase in education funding approved during the 2015 legislative session was one of the most important accomplishments in recent Nevada history. It was only possible because Governor Sandoval worked with Democrats and Republicans to ensure that large corporations pay their fair share to support Nevada schools. Senate Democrats will fight tirelessly against any reckless plan to threaten our progress and sabotage this desperately needed education funding. Every Republican legislator and candidate should condemn this partisan attack on Nevada students and commit to opposing any effort to undo Governor Sandoval’s increase in education funding.”
In 2016, Governor Sandoval said candidates who campaigned on repealing the Commerce Tax are doing a “disservice to the children and families of the state.”
Increased funding has gone to a variety of programs within Nevada’s public schools including expanded full-day kindergarten, class-size reduction, special education programs, services for English Language Learners and low-income students, and incentives for new teachers.
In 2015, Senate Democrats unanimously supported passage of the education funding package.
