FORD STATEMENT ON SENATE PASSAGE OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT BUDGET, MARIJUANA TAX & OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS EXPANSION

CARSON CITY, NV - Today, Nevada Senate Majority Leader Aaron D. Ford issued the following statement on bipartisan negotiations with Governor Brian Sandoval that ensured passage of the Capital Improvement Program budget, an excise tax on retail marijuana sales, and an expansion of the Opportunity Scholarships program for low-income kids:

Nevadans expect their legislators to stand up for their values while finding common ground and reaching across the aisle for the good of this state. I’m proud that we’ve been able to work in a bipartisan fashion to close out this session with these important pieces of legislation.

“With strong consumer protections in place, our recreational marijuana industry is poised to become a critically important source of revenue for Nevada. The capital improvements budget will create good-paying jobs while moving forward on key projects including the Northern Nevada Veterans Home, safety repairs to keep our corrections officers safe, continued support for UNLV’s College of Hotel Administration, and a new engineering building at UNR. Additional funding for the Opportunity Scholarship program will expand educational opportunities for lower and middle-income families. These bills are the product of good-faith cooperation across party lines and represent important steps forward for Nevada.”
