NEVADA SENATE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS ON FAILED RECALL EFFORTS AGAINST SENATOR JOYCE WOODHOUSE AND NICOLE CANNIZZARO

Las Vegas -- Following today’s District Court decision that the recalls fail and no special election will be ordered, the Nevada Senate Democrats issued the following statement:

“Today’s ruling by the District Court judge proves that Senator Roberson underestimated the strength and resilience of Senators Cannizzaro and Woodhouse, and the constituents they represent. What Sen. Roberson likely didn’t expect is that as a result of his careless and cynical attempts to undermine our Democratic process, Nevadans came together to fight back and beat him. This won’t be the last humiliating defeat Roberson and Nevada Republicans will experience in 2018.

RECALL EFFORTS AGAINST SENATORS WOODHOUSE & CANNIZZARO DEFEATED

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 9th, 2018

NEVADA SENATE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS STATEMENT ON THE DEFEAT OF RECALL EFFORTS AGAINST SENATORS WOODHOUSE & CANNIZZARO

Las Vegas, NV – The State Senate recalls have failed.

We appreciate the Clark County Registrar and Nevada Secretary of State, and their hard-working public employees, completing a diligent review of all recall petition signatures and signature removal requests for Senate Districts 5 and 6, under difficult circumstances. The results are now in and they indict, devastatingly, Michael Roberson and the GOP for an incredible waste of time, taxpayer money, and public resources.

We knew that the GOP employed shady tactics in gathering their signatures, because thousands of voters demanded their signatures be removed from the petitions once given the opportunity.

LEGAL SUFFICIENCY OF PARTISAN RECALL EFFORT IN SENATE DISTRICT 6 CHALLENGED IN DISTRICT COURT

Las Vegas, NV – The Nevada Senate Democratic Caucus today issued the following statement from attorney Bradley Schrager of Wolf Rifkin on the filing of a lawsuit challenging the legal sufficiency of the recall petition against Nevada State Senator Nicole Cannizzaro (District 6):

“Much as in Senate District 5 against Senator Joyce Woodhouse, extensive review of the petitions and signature removal forms has found that Republicans are far below the necessary signature threshold, and that they will not be able to surmount the deficit. We are eager to present our challenge in district court, and have high confidence that the court will halt this abuse of Nevada’s recall laws in its tracks.”

“I want to bring the experiences I’ve gained working in the private sector to the State Senate and focus on helping create good-paying jobs for our community,” said Julie Pazina. “I’m stepping up to run for office because I believe Nevada must do more to develop and diversify our economy. PARTISAN RECALL EFFORT AGAINST SENATOR FARLEY FAILS IN SENATE DISTRICT 8

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2017

Republican supporters of the scheme to recall State Senator Patricia Farley turned in less than one-third of the signatures needed to force a special election

Las Vegas, NV – Today, Republican supporters of an effort to recall Nevada State Senator Patricia Farley turned in less than one-third of the signatures needed to force an expensive and unnecessary special election in Senate District 8. Senator Farley and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford applauded the news that this partisan scheme has failed.

“This recall campaign was nothing more than a partisan political game for Senator Roberson, and he should be embarrassed about his role in it,” said Senator Farley. “This manipulation of the recall process has been an insult to voters. It has also been a complete waste of Clark County’s time and of taxpayer resources. I’m incredibly grateful to my colleagues and volunteers for their unwavering support over the past few months, and I look forward to continuing to serve out the rest of my term representing the people of Senate District 8. This experience, and walking my district to talk with so many voters, has emphasized to me once more the importance of public service and engagement. We need more conversations with our constituents like those I’ve been having, and fewer ridiculous power grabs like this failed recall.”

“Senator Farley put her constituents above partisan labels and political games when she joined our caucus this year, and I’m glad she will continue to be a valued member of our team through next year,” said Senator Ford. “I’m proud of the impressive and bipartisan work she did this session to take on the scourge of opioid addiction, expand access to affordable child care, and craft robust new safety rules for recreational marijuana. Senator Farley has been exceptional to work with, she is in public service for all the right reasons, and her constituents clearly agree with that assessment. One down, two to go.”

Background:

Nevada Republicans are pushing a desperate political tactic after losing their legislative majorities in 2016: recalls. Democrats successfully flipped control of both chambers in the Nevada legislature last year – the only state to do so in the nation. After the 2016 election, Senator Patricia Farley left the Senate Republican Caucus, registered as a nonpartisan, and began caucusing with Senate Democrats. The Nevada GOP’s abuse of the recall process has been called “an affront to Nevada voters” and a “subversion of democracy.”

SENATOR FORD STATEMENT ON LEGAL CHALLENGE AGAINST RECALL PETITION TARGETING SENATOR WOODHOUSE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 8, 2017

Thousands of recall petition signers in District 5 are clearly ineligible, and hundreds more are asking the Secretary of State to strike their name

Henderson, NV – Today, Nevada Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford announced new information about the GOP’s recall campaign against State Senator Joyce Woodhouse in District 5.

Examination of the petitions has found that thousands of recall petition signers are clearly ineligible. Hundreds more are now asking the Secretary of State to strike their name from the recall petition for a wide range of reasons. Some say they were misled by signature gatherers, some believe it’s a waste of taxpayer money, and others say they do not remember signing the petition and believe their signature was forged. Any voter who signs a recall petition has the right to request that the Secretary of State strike their name from that petition during the current period.

“The Republican scheme to reverse the results of the 2016 election and undo the will of voters in Senate District 5 is on the verge of collapse,” said Senator Ford. “We have already discovered many blatantly ineligible recall petition signers who are not currently registered to vote in Senate District 5, who did not actually vote in the 2016 election, or who are not even registered to vote at all. Since Friday, hundreds of additional voters have asked the Secretary of State to strike their name from this deceitful petition because they feel they were misled. Others have told us it’s a waste of taxpayer money or they feared that their signature had in fact been forged. Stephen Silberkraus, Michael Roberson, and their team of out-of-state canvassers have run amok in their incredibly cynical campaign to steal this Senate seat. The evidence continues to pile up against this bogus partisan effort.”

Background:

Nevada Republicans are pushing a desperate political tactic after losing their legislative majorities in 2016: recalls. Democrats successfully flipped control of both chambers in the Nevada legislature last year – the only state to do so in the nation. Senator Joyce Woodhouse won re-election in 2016 and has been elected by voters to represent Senate District 5 three times. The Nevada GOP’s abuse of the recall process has been called “an affront to Nevada voters” and a “subversion of democracy.”

Senator Joyce Woodhouse is a 40-year retired educator, a selfless public servant and a proven champion for Nevada’s kids, women, seniors and veterans. Joyce brought her lifelong commitment to public education to the Nevada Senate starting in 2007, and she has established herself as one of the Legislature’s foremost experts and strongest advocates on education issues.

SENATOR JOYCE WOODHOUSE STATEMENT ON GOP RECALL EFFORT

Henderson, NV – Recently re-elected Nevada State Senator Joyce Woodhouse released the following statement today on the news that Republicans have started a baseless effort to recall her and elect her failed 2016 challenger, Carrie Buck.

“It has been an honor to be elected three times by the voters of Senate District 5, and I’m proud of what we accomplished for Nevada kids and families this past legislative session. This is an abuse of the recall process by individuals who are unfortunately still bitter about the results of the last election. I’m grateful to my colleagues and constituents for the outpouring of supportive calls, texts, and tweets. If Republicans do get the required signatures, I’m confident voters will make the same decision they already made last November.”

Senator Woodhouse is a retired 40-year educator and a proven champion for Nevada’s kids. From fighting to protect our access to health care, to passing a weighted funding formula for our K-12 schools and supporting critical apprenticeship and job training programs, Senator Woodhouse always puts the needs of our state’s working families first.

NEVADA SENATE DEMOCRATS STATEMENT ON GOP’S BASELESS RECALL EFFORT AGAINST SENATOR JOYCE WOODHOUSE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 9, 2017

NEVADA SENATE DEMOCRATS STATEMENT ON GOP’S BASELESS RECALL EFFORT AGAINST SENATOR JOYCE WOODHOUSE

Henderson, NV - After running a strong campaign in 2016, Nevada State Senator Joyce Woodhouse succeeded in her re-election bid -- and she won that race fair and square. Today, news reports indicate that Nevada Republicans, including recently defeated Assemblyman Stephen Silberkraus, recently started a recall petition against Senator Woodhouse. If this effort moves forward, it will be doomed to fail.

“Any partisan effort to recall Senator Woodhouse is a pitiful attempt to subvert the will of voters who cast their ballots last November in Senate District 5,” said Senate Majority Leader Aaron D. Ford. “This is a desperate effort to change the results of the last election and steal a seat in the Nevada Senate. We demand that the individuals behind this ridiculous recall petition immediately release their intentions to the public and explain why forcing an expensive special election would not be a complete waste of money for Nevada taxpayers.”

After losing their majority in the 2016 election, Nevada Republicans have approximately zero chance of reclaiming their majority in the 2018 cycle. This baseless recall effort against Senator Woodhouse will be met with fierce opposition from the Senate Democratic Caucus and the State Democratic Party.
