Yvanna Cancela

Yvanna is a proven champion for working Nevadans. She has dedicated her career to community engagement and political mobilization.

Yvanna has dedicated herself to ensuring workers have a strong voice on the job and in their communities. She believes all jobs should give people the opportunity to provide for their families and themselves.

In the state Senate, she'll fight for better jobs, stronger protections for workers, and a better healthcare system to take care of our families.

Yvanna began her career in Las Vegas as a field organizer for Senator Harry Reid’s re-election campaign in 2010.

After the campaign, Cancela went to work for UNITE HERE’s Local 226, the Culinary Workers Union. The Culinary represents 55,000 casino workers on the Strip and Downtown Las Vegas, making it the state's largest worker organization.

As Culinary's political director, Yvanna developed the political training, strategy, and mobilization programs for members. She also helped lead the Culinary's advocacy for social and economic justice on issues ranging from providing quality, affordable healthcare to the need to enact comprehensive immigration reform.

In 2014, Yvanna was named a White House Champion of Change for her work in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform.

Yvanna currently serves as the executive director of the Immigrant Workers Citizenship Project. She leads the state’s only organization to offer free help with naturalization applications.

Yvanna graduated from Northwestern University in 2010 with a degree in communication studies.
