Local Attorney and Former Prosecutor pledges to be the Leader our Children Deserve
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, August 10, 2009

tammy_peterson.jpg(Las Vegas) - Today, Tammy Peterson, local attorney and lifelong Nevadan, announced her candidacy for the Nevada State Senate, Clark County Senate District 8.  Peterson will challenge incumbent Barbara Cegavske for the seat, located in central Summerlin.  Peterson is a partner at Jones Vargas, Chartered specializing in civil litigation. A former prosecutor in the Special Victims Unit with the Clark County District Attorney's office before joining Jones Vargas' litigation division, she has taken over 30 jury trials to verdict, civil and criminal.  She is also a former law clerk to the Honorable Philip M. Pro, of the United States District Court, District of Nevada.

"I am proud to announce my candidacy for State Senate District 8. I have faced many tough challenges in my career as an attorney and I am excited to face yet another tough, but important, challenge. Today in Nevada, we face many difficult issues. But none is more important than the crisis facing our children. Too many are in underperforming schools, too many are without health care, too many are hungry or even homeless, too many are in abusive situations and too many are facing a future without hope," said Peterson. "As a former prosecutor for the Las Vegas Special Victims Unit, I focused on cases of child sexual abuse, assault and child homicide. It was critical work that made a real difference. And as my husband and I raise our own child, our three and a half year old son, I have an even broader perspective on what it means to protect children."

"I am running for the State Senate to continue making a difference in the life of every Nevada child. I am running to make sure we have great schools. As the daughter of a middle school principal and the product of public schools, I know we need the best and brightest teachers in every classroom. But, that will only happen if we make sure the resources are there, something Governor Gibbons and the incumbent Barbara Cegavske forgot during our last legislative session,"  continued Peterson.

"We are thrilled and honored to stand behind Tammy Peterson in her candidacy for the State Senate.  Now, more than ever, the Nevada legislature needs leaders with the integrity and experience to lay a foundation for the future of Nevada," said Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford.  "Tammy Peterson will bring the wisdom of years of professional experience and the understanding of a native Nevadan to the Nevada Legislature."

Tammy Peterson was born and raised in Las Vegas.  She graduated from Valley High School and attended the University of California, Los Angeles where she received a Bachelor's degree in Economics/ International Area Studies.  Tammy graduated from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and returned to her hometown of Las Vegas to clerk for the Honorable Philip M. Pro of the United States District Court, District of Nevada.  Tammy has invested in her community since returning to Las Vegas.  She has served as president of the Junior League of Las Vegas and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Nevada, among other community organizations.  She is married to Chris Peterson; they have one three-year old son, Corbin.
