Statement from Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford on Passage of Room Tax Increase in Senate PDF Print E-mail

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 9, 2009

(Carson City) – “One of our many jobs as legislators is to balance Nevada’s budget responsibly. That is tough in normal times and we are not in normal times.  Jobs are disappearing, and so are many of the tourist-based tax dollars we have come to depend on. We are at a crossroads. But we must face the future with courage and competence because it is our moral responsibility to leave our children a state in better shape than we found it.”

“That means we can’t fix our current budget problems on the backs of our children by cutting funding for education. Nevada has no future if we decimate our schools to the point where teachers can’t teach and students can’t learn. That is why we will be raising hotel room taxes that will be dedicated to education. It is a very narrow increase with a very specific purpose and we believe it is the right thing to do to protect our schools and our children.”

“Legislative leaders will continue to comb through our state’s expenses to determine what cuts we can make in these tough times, and we will propose a budget that meets the basic needs of our state without plunging Nevada into mediocrity.”

Makes various changes relating to motor vehicle and traffic safety
SB 145
Sponsored by: Sen. Schneider
BILL STATUS: April 11, 2009- Pursuant to Joint Standing Rule No. 14.3.1, no further action allowed

This bill removes the provision of existing law which prohibits the issuance of a citation for failure to wear a safety belt in a passenger car or taxicab unless such vehicle is stopped or the person is arrested for another offense. By removing this provision, the bill allows the issuance of a citation for such a violation even absent any other conduct (that is, as a “primary offense”).

This bill also makes it a violation of law for the driver of a taxicab to fail to ensure that a child passenger is wearing a safety belt, provided that the child is of such a size and weight as to be required to wear a safety belt.
