Reno, NV - Today, Assemblywoman Sheila Leslie announced her candidacy for the Nevada Senate, Washoe District 1.  Leslie has served with distinction in the Nevada Legislature since 1998, most recently as the Majority Whip of the Nevada Assembly.  Leslie is well known for her courageous leadership on behalf of Nevada's citizens who are most in need.

"I believe I can best serve my community and state as a member of the Nevada Senate by focusing on issues affecting Nevada's children and families.   I plan to continue to be a voice for children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities and work closely with community groups to enact meaningful legislation to improve the quality of life for all Nevadans.   I look forward to contributing my experience and leadership in health and human services, renewable energy, and the budget process in the years ahead."

Assemblywoman Leslie has served Reno families for more than 25 years.  She was the Executive Director of the Children's Cabinet for over seven years, where she created innovative and award-winning program for Nevada's youth.  She also was employed as the founding director of the Northern Nevada Food Bank.  Currently, she is employed by the 2nd Judicial District Court as the Specialty Courts Coordinator.

Leslie has served Nevada on numerous community boards, including the Sierra Nevada Girl Scout council, the Gang Alternatives Partnership, and the Western States Youth Services Network.  For her outstanding service, Leslie has received many awards, most recently the Hand in Hand Award from Nevada PEP (Parents Educating Parents) in 2009, the Consumer Advocate of the Year form the Nevada Justice Association, (2008), Public Health Legislator of the Year from the School of Public Health at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (2007), and the Community Visionary Award from the Northern Nevada Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (2006).
