Assemblyman pledges to build a better future for all Nevadans

ruben_kihuen_1_-_copy.jpg(Las Vegas) - Today, at the Latin Chamber of Commerce, Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen announced his candidacy for State Senate District 10 (Clark County).  Assemblyman Kihuen was first elected to the Nevada Assembly in 2006 and served with distinction since. He has been a community organizer, college recruiter, and is currently a Community Liaison for the College of Southern Nevada. During his three years in office, Ruben has voted to increase the penalties for domestic violence, for more money and higher standard for schools and teachers and to give small business low-interest loans when they want to expand their workforce.

Ruben is the embodiment of the American dream-born in Mexico he became the first in his family to graduate from college, buy a home and serve his state and country as an elected official," said Nevada Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford.  "We look forward to his partnership in the Nevada legislature in tackling the challenges facing Nevada."

Kihuen graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in Education and is currently completing his Master's Degree in Public Administration at the University of Oklahoma- Nellis Air Force Base Campus. Aside from his political responsibilities, Assemblyman Kihuen serves as a Community Liaison/Academic Advisor at the College of Southern Nevada, and is a past member of the Clark County Community Development Advisory Committee and the North Las Vegas Citizen's Advisory Committee.


Assemblyman Kihuen's accomplishments include: Nevada State Legislature Freshman of the Year; Rising Star Award, Clark County Democratic Party; Hispanic of the Year, Latin Chamber of Commerce; John F. Kennedy Award, Nevada State Democratic Party; Outstanding Community Activist, City of Las Vegas; Nevada High Schools Soccer Player of the Year.

Legislation To Watch

Revises provisions related to energy
SB 358
Sponsored by: Senator Horsford
BILL STATUS: Approved by the Governor, Chapter 321. Sections 1 to 1.51, inclusive, 1.55 to 19.7, inclusive, 19.9 to 20.9, inclusive, and 21 effective May 28, 2009. Sections 1.51, 1.85, 1.87, 1.92, 1.93, 1.95, 4.3 to 9, inclusive, and 19.4 expire by limitation June 30, 2011. Sections 1.53 and 19.8 effective July 1, 2011.

Senate Bill 358 would revise provisions relating to energy and state and residential property. This bill would require a portion of the federal stimulus money to be used for the state energy reduction plan for state buildings. This bill will also require the Director of the Office of Energy to adopt regulations establishing a list of renewable energy installations and energy efficiency improvements that are suitable for residential property.
