Representing Senate District 3 in Clark County, Senator Valerie Wiener is an author, publisher, speaker and Majority Whip of the Nevada Senate. She was first elected to the Nevada State Senate in 1996 and served as the Minority Whip from 2001-2007. In the 2009 session, she served as Chair the Committee on Health and Education and Vice Chair for the Committee on Judiciary.


Senator Wiener was born in Las, Vegas NV and graduated from Las Vegas High School. She then attended the University of Missouri, Columbia where she received a B.J. and M.A. in Journalism. She went on to receive a M.A. in Contemporary Literature from the University of Illinois, Springfield. She also attended the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.


Senator Wiener has been an active and well-rounded member of the Las Vegas community over the years. She is on the board of both the Public Education Foundation and the Better Business Bureau. She was a founding member of Action for Healthy Kids/ Nevada State Team.


Beyond her impressive involvement in her community, Senator Wiener is the President/CEO of both Wiener Communications Group and PowerMark Publishing. She is the author of five books that earned 11 major state and national awards. All of her involvement, both professionally and politically, earned her a coveted spot in the Leadership Las Vegas Hall of Fame in 2006. She is only the third inductee in the program's 20-year history.

Legislation To Watch

Requires certain governmental entities to work cooperatively to establish the Henderson to North Las Vegas Fixed Guideway Corridor

BILL STATUS: April 11, 2009- Pursuant to Joint Standing Rule No. 14.3.1, no further action allowed

This bill requires Clark County, the Cities of Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas and the Department of Transportation to work cooperatively to establish the Henderson to North Las Vegas Fixed Guideway Corridor, a fixed guideway to be constructed beginning at Nevada State College in the City of Henderson and running through the City of Henderson, a portion of the unincorporated area of Clark County, the City of Las Vegas and the City of North Las Vegas, and ending at the North Las Vegas regional campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. High speed rail lines that have been built around the country have given jobs to thousands of people and served millions of travelers, all while saving energy.
