Senator Maggie Carlton:
Now is the time to protect our neighbhorhoods

Carson City, Wednesday, February 12, 2009
carlton_photoshop_2.jpgHello -

When my children were growing up, my neighbors, like my husband and I, were working parents trying to balance taking care of their families and their other responsibilities.  In many ways, our neighbors were an extended family. Their children were my kids' first friends. They watched over my home when my husband and I were gone.  I love my neighborhood, and the people in it. That is why I ran for State Senate 16 years ago. I wanted to protect my neighbors, my neighborhood and my community. Now I want to protect every neighborhood in Nevada. We owe it to our children.

As Nevada faces a difficult foreclosure crisis, our first priority must be to keep our neighborhoods strong and healthy.
This week in Carson City, legislative leaders from both the Assembly and the Senate called for real solutions to the housing crisis. This crisis affects us all. One out of every eleven Nevada families is facing foreclosure.  Our friends, family, and co-workers are losing their homes. Our neighborhoods are no longer the safe havens they once were for their children and we are all affected by the decline in our housing value.

Today we heard testimony about legislation that would require banks to mediate with distressed homeowners prior to foreclosure- it is an opportunity to find a better solution than a family losing their home.  We also heard about legislation that would end the foreclosure scams that affected so many Nevadans.  This solution would protect homeowners by requiring anyone who practices as foreclosure or loan modification consultants to be licensed with the state.  This is just the beginning. I encourage you to learn more about the real solutions we have for addressing the crisis facing us.

And I ask you to join me. Together, we will make sure every neighborhood is strong, healthy and a great place to raise a family.

All My Best,

SB 14
Sponsored by: Senator Bernice Matthews
BILL STATUS: Approved by the Governor. Chapter 76, Effective May 13, 2009

Nationally, nearly one third of American women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or a boyfriend at some point in their lives.  The health-related costs of crime against intimate partners is staggering. In Nevada, over 35,000 people sought domestic violence related services in 2007-2008, including close to 15,000 children.
